15 Weekend Getaways in California (for Every Vibe)

May 27, 2026

California is one of the best states in the U.S. for weekend travel (and maybe just, in general) — it has everything you could possibly want in a vacation. You can be at the top of a mountain in the morning, and catch the sunset at the beach later in the same day if you wanted to (depending on traffic conditions). There’s really an endless amount of ideas for weekend getaways in California, so if you need help deciding where to go, this list has you covered.

As someone who was born and raised in San Diego, many of these destinations are places I’ve visited over the ~3 decades I lived in the state. I have done everything from spontaneous weekend road trips to longer planned getaways, and even after living most of my life in California, there’s still plenty more of the state I haven’t seen. One of my favorite things about California is how dramatically the scenery can change within just a few hours — you can go from rugged coastline to desert landscapes to alpine lakes all within the same weekend.

Some destinations are ideal for couples, some are perfect for a girls weekend trip (or if you’re an introvert like me, for solo travel), and others are simply great if you’re looking to disconnect and recharge for a few days. Regardless of if you’re looking for a quick beach escape, a scenic road trip down Highway 1, a cozy mountain town, a national park adventure, a wine country retreat, or simply just want to relax and unwind poolside, there’s no shortage of incredible weekend getaways in California for every type of traveler.

Why California Is Perfect for Weekend Trips

California is one of those states that almost feels designed for weekend travel. Within a single state, you have beach towns, mountains, deserts, national parks, wine country, major cities, and small coastal communities — which means there’s truly a California weekend getaway for every type of traveler. Regardless of if your vibe is a relaxing spa weekend in Palm Springs, a scenic coastal road trip through Big Sur, or a hiking-focused adventure in Yosemite, California has it all.

Another reason weekend trips in California are so popular is because many destinations are relatively easy to reach by car. A lot of the best places to visit are within driving distance of major cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, making it easy to plan a quick escape without needing a long vacation. California is a great state for road trips, which makes the journey itself part of the experience — especially along scenic routes like Highway 1 or through the Sierra Nevada mountains.

One of my personal favorite things about traveling in California is how different each region feels. Northern California, Southern California, the Central Coast, and the desert areas all have completely different landscapes, weather, and energy. You could visit California multiple times and still have entirely different experiences depending on which part of the state you’re visiting.

No matter what type of traveler you are or what kind of experience you’re after, California offers an incredible mix of adventure, relaxation, food, scenery, and unique experiences that make it ideal for both quick weekend getaways (and longer vacations).

Quick Tips for Planning a California Weekend Getaway

Best time to visit California

One of the best things about planning a California weekend getaway is that there’s really no bad time to visit. Different regions of California shine during different seasons, which means there’s somewhere ideal to explore in the state year-round. Summer is ideal for beach destinations and mountain towns, while spring and fall often bring smaller crowds and milder temperatures throughout much of the state. Winter can also be a great time to visit places like Lake Tahoe for skiing or Palm Springs for warmer desert weather.

That said, California’s weather can vary much more than people expect in certain parts of the state. Coastal areas in Central California can feel cool and foggy even during summer months, mountain destinations like Mammoth and Big Bear can still have snow well into spring, and desert temperatures out in Palm Desert can become extremely hot during the warmer months.

It really depends on which part of California you want to visit, so I’ve included a “best time to visit” to each of the destinations on the list — keep scrolling to read more.

How many days you need for a weekend trip

Most California weekend trips work best with about 2–3 days, especially if you’re driving from another part of the state. A Friday through Sunday trip is usually enough time to explore a new destination, enjoy a few activities, and still have time to relax without feeling overly rushed.

If you’re visiting somewhere farther away or planning to explore a national park, adding an extra day or two can make a huge difference. California is a very large state, and drive times between destinations can sometimes be longer than expected (everything you’ve heard about “LA traffic” is completely accurate) — so it’s important to factor in extra time for commuting regardless of where you road trip to.

Renting a car vs road tripping your own vehicle

For many weekend getaways in California, having a car is honestly the easiest way to explore. While some larger cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco have decent public transportation or walkable areas, many of the state’s best destinations are much easier to experience with your own vehicle. Scenic drives, coastal viewpoints, hiking areas, and smaller towns are often spread out enough that having a car gives you much more flexibility. If your weekend getaway includes leaving any of the major cities, you’ll want your own vehicle.

If you already live in California or nearby, road tripping your own car can help save you money and make packing easier. However, if you’re flying into the state, renting a car is often worth it — especially for destinations like Big Sur, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, or Joshua Tree where you’ll likely want the freedom to explore at your own pace. Or if you don’t want to put the miles on your own vehicle, then a car rental might be worth it to you too.

What to pack for different regions of California

One thing that surprises a lot of travelers is how many different climates California has. Packing for a beach trip in San Diego looks completely different than packing for a mountain getaway in Big Bear or a desert weekend in Palm Springs.

Layers are almost always a good idea, especially for coastal destinations where mornings and evenings can feel chilly even during summer. Comfortable walking shoes are also essential for most California trips, whether you’re exploring cities, hiking trails, or wandering around beach towns. If you’re visiting national parks or mountain destinations, it’s smart to bring extra layers, sunscreen, and reusable water bottles since weather and temperatures can change quickly depending on elevation.

The Best Weekend Getaways in California

1. Big Sur

Big Sur is easily one of the most iconic weekend getaways in California, especially if you love scenic drives and coastal views. Stretching along Highway 1 between Carmel and San Simeon, this area is known for its dramatic cliffs, rugged coastline, redwood groves, and some of the most beautiful ocean views in the state. A weekend here is less about rushing between attractions and more about slowing down and enjoying the drive itself.

Some of the most popular stops in Big Sur include Bixby Bridge, McWay Falls, Pfeiffer Beach, and countless scenic pull-offs along the highway. There are also plenty of hiking trails throughout the region if you want to spend part of your weekend outdoors.

2. Napa Valley

If you’re looking for a relaxing and romantic California weekend getaway, Napa Valley is always a solid choice. Located in Northern California wine country, Napa is known for its vineyards, wine tastings, luxury resorts, and beautiful rolling landscapes. Even if you’re not a huge wine drinker, the overall atmosphere here makes it a great destination for slowing down and enjoying a quieter weekend away.

Beyond wine tasting, Napa also offers incredible restaurants, spa resorts, boutique shopping, and scenic drives throughout the valley. Fall is especially beautiful during harvest season, but Napa makes a great weekend trip year-round.

3. Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of the best weekend trips in California if you enjoy outdoor adventures and mountain scenery. Located along the California and Nevada border, Lake Tahoe completely transforms depending on the season. During summer, visitors come for hiking, beaches, paddle boarding, and boating, while winter brings skiing and snowboarding throughout the region.

One of the best things about Tahoe is that there’s a little bit of everything. You can spend your weekend relaxing lakeside, exploring hiking trails, enjoying nightlife in South Lake Tahoe, or taking scenic drives around the lake. The water here is unbelievably clear, and the surrounding mountain scenery makes it one of the most beautiful destinations in California year-round.

4. San Diego

San Diego is one of the easiest California weekend getaways for travelers looking for beaches, sunshine, good food, and a laid-back atmosphere. I may be biased since this is my hometown, but with beautiful weather year-round, San Diego works well for both quick weekend trips and longer vacations. The city offers a mix of coastal scenery, nightlife, outdoor activities, and walkable neighborhoods that make it easy to fill an entire weekend itinerary.

Popular areas to explore include La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Coronado, the Gaslamp Quarter, and Balboa Park. You can spend your days relaxing on the beach, visiting local cafes, kayaking near sea caves, or exploring the city’s food scene.

5. Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is one of the most bucket-list-worthy weekend trips in California for nature lovers. Known for its massive granite cliffs, waterfalls, giant sequoias, and scenic hiking trails, Yosemite offers some of the most recognizable landscapes in the country. Even a short weekend trip here feels incredibly immersive thanks to the scale of the scenery throughout the park.

Popular spots include Yosemite Valley, Tunnel View, Glacier Point, Yosemite Falls, and Half Dome. Depending on the season, you can spend your weekend hiking, photographing waterfalls, or simply driving through the park and enjoying the viewpoints. Yosemite can get extremely busy during peak travel months, so planning ahead for lodging and park reservations is definitely recommended.

6. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is one of the best California weekend getaways if you want a mix of beach town charm, wine country, and a more upscale coastal atmosphere. Often referred to as the “American Riviera,” Santa Barbara is known for its Spanish-style architecture, oceanfront scenery, palm-lined streets, and relaxed pace.

During a weekend trip here, you can spend time walking through downtown Santa Barbara, visiting local wineries, relaxing on the beach, or exploring areas like the Funk Zone for restaurants and wine tasting rooms. The city feels both scenic and polished without feeling overly hectic, which makes it a great option for couples or relaxing girls trips.

Palm Springs is one of the most popular California weekend getaways for travelers looking to relax and unwind. Located in the Southern California desert, Palm Springs is known for its luxury resorts, poolside atmosphere, mid-century modern architecture, and warm weather. It’s especially popular for quick weekend escapes from Los Angeles and San Diego.

A weekend in Palm Springs can be as relaxing or activity-filled as you want it to be. Some travelers spend most of their time at resorts and spas, while others explore nearby attractions like Joshua Tree National Park, local hiking trails, vintage shops, and downtown restaurants. The desert scenery here feels completely different from coastal California, which makes it a fun change of pace.

8. Monterey & Carmel-by-the-Sea

Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea make one of the most scenic coastal weekend trips in California. Located along the Central Coast, these neighboring towns are known for ocean views, charming streets, seafood restaurants, and beautiful drives along the coastline. The area feels both relaxing and incredibly picturesque, making it ideal for a slower-paced getaway.

Visitors can spend the weekend exploring Cannery Row, visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium, driving along 17-Mile Drive, or wandering through the storybook-style streets of Carmel. The beaches and coastal viewpoints throughout the area are beautiful year-round, and the slower atmosphere makes this destination especially appealing for couples or quiet weekend escapes.

9. Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is one the most unique weekend getaways in California thanks to its desert landscapes, rock formations, and famous Joshua trees scattered throughout the park. Located a few hours from Los Angeles, Joshua Tree has become increasingly popular for weekend trips focused on nature, photography, hiking, and stargazing.

One of the best parts about visiting Joshua Tree is the atmosphere surrounding the area itself. Beyond the national park, there are countless stylish Airbnbs, desert cabins, coffee shops, and vintage stores throughout nearby towns. The sunsets and night skies here are especially beautiful, making it one of the best California weekend trips for travelers looking to disconnect for a few days.

10. San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the best California weekend getaways if you’re looking for a mix of city experiences, coastal scenery, food, and iconic landmarks. While it’s obviously a larger city destination, San Francisco still feels unique compared to anywhere else in California thanks to its historic neighborhoods, waterfront views, cable cars, and dramatic hills overlooking the bay.

There’s plenty to fill an entire weekend here, whether you want to walk across the Golden Gate Bridge, explore neighborhoods like North Beach and Chinatown, visit Fisherman’s Wharf, or spend time browsing local cafes and bookstores throughout the city. San Francisco is also a great base for day trips to places like Sausalito, Muir Woods, and Napa Valley if you want to extend your getaway beyond the city itself.

11. Paso Robles

Paso Robles is often considered a quieter and more laid-back alternative to Napa Valley, making it a great California weekend getaway for wine lovers who want a slower pace. Located along the Central Coast, Paso Robles is known for vineyards, rolling hills, boutique wineries, and a more relaxed atmosphere overall.

In addition to wine tasting, visitors can explore downtown Paso Robles, visit local olive oil farms, relax in nearby hot springs, or enjoy scenic drives throughout the region. The area feels less polished and tourist-heavy than some other California wine destinations, which many travelers actually prefer.

12. Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is one of the most beautiful beach weekend getaways in California. Known for its coastal cliffs, art galleries, oceanfront restaurants, and scenic beaches, Laguna has a more upscale and artistic atmosphere compared to many other Southern California beach towns.

A weekend here can include beach hopping, sunset walks, shopping downtown, or simply relaxing by the ocean. Popular spots like Thousand Steps Beach and Victoria Beach offer some of the most photogenic coastal scenery in the area. Laguna Beach also works especially well for couples trips and relaxing weekend escapes.

13. San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is one of the most underrated weekend trips in California. Located roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, SLO combines beach town energy, wine country access, and a laid-back Central Coast atmosphere that makes it easy to enjoy for a few days.

Visitors can explore downtown San Luis Obispo, hike nearby trails, visit nearby beaches like Avila Beach and Pismo Beach, or explore local wineries throughout the surrounding area. The town has a relaxed college-town feel while still offering plenty to do for a weekend getaway.

14. Big Bear Lake

Big Bear Lake is one of the most popular mountain weekend trips in California, especially for travelers looking to escape the city without driving too far from Los Angeles or Southern California. Surrounded by pine forests and mountain scenery, Big Bear offers a completely different atmosphere from the beaches and desert destinations the state is often known for.

During winter, Big Bear becomes a popular destination for skiing, snowboarding, and cozy cabin getaways. In the warmer months, visitors can spend their weekends hiking, kayaking, boating, ziplining, or relaxing by the lake. The town itself also has plenty of restaurants, shops, and cabin rentals that make it easy to plan either an adventure-focused trip or a quieter mountain escape.

15. Catalina Island

Catalina Island is one of the most unique weekend getaways in California because it feels surprisingly far away despite being located just off the Southern California coast. Accessible by ferry from places like Long Beach and Dana Point, Catalina offers a mix of beach town charm, outdoor activities, and island scenery without needing a passport.

Most visitors spend their time in Avalon, where you’ll find waterfront restaurants, hotels, shops, and scenic coastal views. Catalina is especially fun if you want a California weekend trip that feels a little different from the usual road trip destinations.
