Best Time to Visit Tulum (for Weather, Crowds & Prices)

May 5, 2026

If you’re trying to figure out the best time to visit Tulum, the answer really depends on what kind of trip you’re looking for. I’ve visited Tulum twice at different times of the year (October 2018 and April 2024), and each trip felt completely different in terms of weather, crowds, and overall vibe.

Tulum is one of those destinations that’s beautiful year-round, but choosing when to go can completely shape your experience. Located in Quintana Roo along the Caribbean Sea, Tulum offers everything from white-sand beaches and cenotes to ancient Mayan ruins and a laid-back, boho vibe.

Whether you’re seeking perfectly sunny beach days along the Riviera Maya with the buzz of peak-season activity, or prefer the tranquility of quieter months with fewer crowds and more affordable prices, each season brings something a little different.

Quick Guide: The Best Time to Visit Tulum

The best time to visit Tulum is during the dry season from December through April, when you can expect sunny skies, lower humidity, and ideal beach weather. This is the most popular time to visit, so while the conditions are nearly perfect, it also comes with higher prices and more crowds. If you’re looking for a balance between good weather and fewer people, May and November are great shoulder-season months to consider. And if you’re traveling on a budget, the summer and early fall months offer the lowest prices — just be prepared for heat, humidity, and occasional rain.

Tulum Weather by Season

Dry Season (Peak Season) — December to April

Tulum’s dry season is hands down the most popular time to visit. You’ll get warm, sunny days with minimal rainfall and lower humidity, making it perfect for beach days, exploring cenotes, and visiting the Tulum ruins. Temperatures are comfortable without being overly hot, and the ocean conditions are usually calm and clear. The only downside is that this is peak travel season, so expect higher hotel rates (especially in Zona Hotelera) and a busier overall vibe, especially around the holidays and spring break.

Shoulder Season — May & November

If you’re looking for that sweet spot between good weather and fewer crowds, May and November are two of the best months to visit Tulum. You’ll still get plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures, but with fewer tourists compared to peak season. Prices also tend to drop slightly, making it a great time to find better deals on hotels. May can start to feel a bit more humid, while November is typically just coming out of the rainy season, but overall both months offer a really nice balance.

Rainy Season — June to October

The rainy season in Tulum runs from June through October, bringing hotter temperatures, higher humidity, and more frequent rain showers. That said, it doesn’t usually rain all day — most showers are short and happen in the afternoon or evening. This time of year also overlaps with hurricane season, especially from August through October. While the weather can be less predictable, this is when you’ll find the lowest prices and the fewest crowds, plus the surrounding jungle looks especially lush and vibrant.

Best Time to Visit Tulum for Good Weather

If your priority is perfect beach weather, the best time to visit Tulum is between December and April. During these months, you can expect clear skies, warm temperatures, and low humidity — basically ideal conditions for spending your days on Tulum Beach or swimming in cenotes. It’s also the best time for exploring outdoor attractions without dealing with extreme heat. This is when Tulum is at its most picture-perfect, which is exactly why it’s also the busiest time of year.

Cheapest Time to Visit Tulum

The cheapest time to visit Tulum is during the low season from June through October. Prices for boutique hotels and rental cars drop significantly, and you can often find the best deals on flights into Cancun International airport as well. If you’re trying to travel on a budget, this is your best bet. Just keep in mind that you’ll be trading lower prices for hotter, more humid weather and a higher chance of rain. Seaweed (sargassum) is also more common during these months, which can impact beach conditions depending on the timing of your trip.

If you’re also considering which area in Tulum is the best to stay in (Hotel Zone? Aldea Zama? La Veleta?), I have a more in depth post on that below.

Best Time to Visit Tulum for Fewer Crowds

For fewer crowds, aim for the shoulder months of May and November, or even early December before the holiday rush begins. These periods fall just outside of peak season, meaning you’ll still get relatively good weather without the heavy influx of tourists. Attractions feel less crowded, restaurants are easier to get into, and the overall vibe is much more relaxed. It’s a great option if you want to experience Tulum without the peak-season energy.

Tulum Seaweed Season (Sargassum)

One thing to keep in mind when planning your trip is sargassum (seaweed) season, which typically runs from around April through October. The amount can vary year to year, but it’s generally most noticeable during the summer months. While many hotels and beach clubs do their best to clear it, it can still affect the look and feel of the beaches. If having crystal-clear water is a top priority, you’ll have the best chance of avoiding seaweed between late November and early spring.

During my last visit to Tulum in early April 2024, the seaweed was already present. So while it’s something you can’t really predict, it’s just another piece to factor in.

Tulum Month-by-Month Breakdown

  • January – March: Best weather, peak season
  • April: Transition month, still good
  • May: Hot but fewer crowds
  • June – August: Hot, humid, possible seaweed
  • September – October: Rainiest months
  • November: Underrated sweet spot
  • December: Great weather, rising crowds

The best time to visit Tulum also depends on what kind of trip you’re planning. If you’re going for a more upscale, aesthetic beach experience, the dry season (January through March) is ideal. For budget travel, the fall months (especially September and October) offer the lowest prices. If you want a mix of good weather and a more relaxed atmosphere, May or November are your best bet. And if you’re looking for a more social, lively vibe, the peak season months tend to have the most energy.

  • Budget travel → Sept–Oct
  • Balanced trip → May or Nov
  • Party / social vibe → Dec–April
